Achieved numerous national awards in the field of Photography while being a life-member of the Photographic Society of Sri Lanka & the National Photographic Art Society of Sri Lanka the oldest two societies of the home land. Bandu's ever solo exhibition of photography was held at prestigious Lionel Wendt Art Gallery, Colombo in August 1991 which was received a great feedback. Bandu's works had been exhibited in 68 International Salons held in thirty two countries around the globe whilst gaining more than 20 awards.
Two Asian photography magazines Asian Photography & Smart Photography had published featured articles about Bandu, wherein the Editor Mathew Thottungal stated " It is said that immortality is the key to modern-day photography and the SriLankan based photographer Bandu Gunaratne is one such visual artiste who balances the fine line between creativity, emotion and business. Over time, he has been bestowed with laurels, including awards at prestigious international competitions which speak for his creative artistry. Gunaratne's art is beyond superlatives and has become a long way, for he doesn't believe in shooting, but simply freezing the magical moment for posterity". |
Bandu has held many positions in local photography organisations extending his volunteer services to them. He is a visiting lecturer in photography for the University of Moratuwa and the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. Bandu's contribution to photography workshops and seminars held in Sri Lanka is numerous to mention. Serving as a judge in national competitions as far back as in 1995 Bandu had rendered his services as a judge in International Photography competitions for the last nine years held locally. He became the first SriLankan to judge an overseas photo competition in 2015, via internet, the Spanish League of Digital Photography.
